Nerd on a Stick
Day 1, work experience

Today I started work experience in a hospital. Which basically meant the first 5 hours were spent doing induction related activities, with the last few hours spent receiving goods. Luckily, the guys in the BME department are good fun.

There are some things you only notice in retrospect. Today it was “Oh.. there are no girls in here. At. All. Wait… is that right?” I’ll give it some time - most people are still away on a christmas break.

The other student doing work experience with me is two cents short of a dollar. That is all I’m going to say about that.

I have a bit of a record of getting lost getting home from this hospital. Tunnels usually don’t work all that well for me, and to add to that there’s a cemetery nearby which makes going around the long way particularly long. So, I backtracked today and picked up another visitor who was lost on their way to the station.

We got talking and it turns out that her friend suffered a spinal injury on christmas day. She was paralysed from her sternum down, but is beginning to gain sensation in her arm. She seemed so cheery, it was hard to believe she’d just spent a day with a friend whose life had just potentially taken a very unfortunate turn. The patient didn’t even live in Sydney! Times like these you realise how fortunate you are to be very much intact.

Despite having slightly freaky dizzy spells. Yeah, I freaked out a bit today…
